Small Sword

French & Italian Style

A typical French Small Sword is a weapon with a short blade of approx. 80cm in length, with two small flat shells, two small quillons with two small arms touching the shells and a knuckle bow. The Small Sword reached it's full development around the end of the 17th century and the mid of the 18th century. The fighting method of the French Small Sword is a very fast and insidious one, and yet a great emphasis was made on elegance of the execution of its techniques.

French Small Sword is practiced mostly from techniques based on the teachings of masters like Domenico Angelo (1787) and Monsier L’Abbat (1734). Also the research and teaching by IMAF instructors and The Federazione Italiana di Scherma Antica e Storica. (FISAS)

Italian Small Sword although at the time it was more like a smaller version of the cuphilt rapier, with a blade longer and heavier than that of the French small sword, it is practiced based on teachings such as those by Rosaroll Scorza & Pietro Grisetti (1803).
